Even with the Covid-19 pandemic upending everything we planned for 2020, it would be easy to surmise that most of us would not bother with resolutions for 2021. However this couldn’t be farther than the truth – a recent survey on the internet revealed that almost 80% of the respondents still intended to buckle down and keep pushing for self-improvement.

A journey of a 1000 miles begins with a single step, said Lao Tzu, similarly the journey for self improvement starts from self awareness.

A study by Daniel Goleman and Richard Boyatzis revealed that improved emotional self-awareness resulted in significant improvement in workplace effectiveness for 100% respondents while 81% linked improved emotional self-awareness to a reduction in stress.

Importance of Self Awareness

Self-awareness is one of the most important traits towards improvement. By bringing self-awareness to the workplace, leaders are able to better identify who they are as employees and why they work the way they do.

Using this information, leaders can then play to their strengths while understanding their areas of development opportunity.
Now the question is,

How can you become the self-aware individual that everyone craves for?

You can start by following these tips:

1. Ascertain your behaviour preference:

You may think you know yourself the best, and you likely do! But take a personality inventory to confirm your underlying behaviours, beliefs, while also discovering more about yourself. Inventories including Emotional Intelligence or the Big Five, provide specific insights with regards to your work environment preference, and where will you thrive the best.

2. Ask for feedback:

To take your self-awareness to the next level, create an open conversation with your employees, your peers and your superiors. Discuss with each of them the qualities that you possess, which are of value to them and to the company, and what leadership skills you can improve. Your co-workers may point out that you come to work with a positive attitude and a smile on your face brightens the office space, or that your last minute preparation for a weekly meeting keeps others from completing their agenda section.

3. Reflect:

Self-awareness is a matter of reflection. Take time out of every day to think about how you deal with different situations. Were you proud of your response to an irate client, or could you have handled it more level-headedly? Make specific mental notes of what you did well and what you could have improved on. Looking back at your daily interactions, you’ll be better off preparing yourself for a similar situation next time. As you start taking time to reflect, ask others who have been in attendance to also evaluate your actions and reactions. Your feedback and confirmation of your analysis will help to increase your confidence in your personal reflections.

The value of self-awareness at work is immeasurable. By taking these tips to increase your awareness, you will be able to develop your leadership skills, enjoy a positive working environment and increase the performance of your company.
